Choosing to become a racehorse owner can feel like a daunting task, and choosing the right trainer with whom you feel comfortable and happy with can be tricky. However, you can feel assured your racehorse(s) is always given the best care and attention, and that you can discuss with John where and when your racehorse(s) run so that you get the most enjoyment from your racing. You will always receive a warm welcome from John and his team at the yard when you visit. During your time there you can watch your horse(s) galloping and discuss your horses’ training and progress.
Your days out at the races will be great fun and watching your racehorse run is a whole new experience that is hard to match. Whilst racing, ownership also gives you full access to the owners’ and trainers’ bar, the parade ring, the winner’s enclosure, excellent viewing positions during racing and other race-day privileges. Other benefits of being an owner include the VAT Scheme, sponsorship opportunities and appearance money.
Apart from buying a racehorse, becoming an owner (as either a sole owner or a co-owner) requires you to register yourself as an owner, register the racehorse (if not already registered), choose and register your colours/silks and register the horse’s name (if not already registered) with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) through Weatherbys. Third party liability insurance is essential and is covered when you become a member of the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA).
Types of Racehorse Ownership
Sole Ownership where you own 100% of the horse and take full responsibility for all of the costs involved in purchasing and training your racehorse. You will receive all winning should your horse win or be placed and any profit made from selling your horse.
There are four types of co-ownership.
- Company Ownership where the horse is owned by the company’s shareholders. A great way to promote your company!
- Joint Ownership where there are between 2 and 12 owners. This is a very good way to reduce costs!
- Leasing where you lease a racehorse from John over a set period of time.
- A Racing Partnership consisting of between 2 and 20 individuals of which at least 2 must become, or already be, registered owners.
Give John a call on 01325 374366 if you would like to have a racehorse with us either as a new owner or as an existing owner. We have great opportunities for co-ownership or full ownership with both Flat and National Hunt Racehorses. Please visit the British Horseracing Authority, Weatherbys and the Racehorse Owners Association websites and read through them thoroughly as they provide all the information you need to register as an owner. However, if you are having difficulty registering as an owner please contact John who will be happy to help you complete the process.
